More information about technical requirements

Content compatibility

  • Some digital curriculum resources may not function correctly with plug-ins on your computer. To find out which plug-ins support a specific learning object, view the object's metadata.

Popup blockers

  • Popup blockers can work independently of each other, and so it is possible to have several layers of popup blockers on your machine. For example, you can have a popup blocker built into your browser and a third-party blocker installed in your browser's toolbar. If you turn off one blocker, the other blocker will still be active. You can configure each blocker to allow or disallow popups from specific websites. The list of websites is generally referred to as a 'whitelist'. To allow popups for a particular website, all of your blockers must include that site on their whitelist/s.

  • The Adobe Shockwave Player plug-in comes in a full version or a 'thin', or 'slim', version. Content developed in Adobe Director requires the full version of Shockwave Player to behave and function correctly. Files that have a .dcr extension can be viewed in a web browser that has the full Shockwave Player plug-in installed.

Screen resolution

  • Digital curriculum resources are optimised for a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels. In order for headers and navigation areas to be completely visible and to operate correctly, allow for an area of at least 760 x 570 pixels. Where a web page contains standalone embedded digital content, each item should be completely visible and operate successfully when it is displayed in an area of 760 x 570 pixels. This represents a 4:3 aspect ratio on a monitor with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels (less the header and navigation areas). Some digital curriculum resources that are not developed in Flash will not scale, requiring you to scroll. This is due to restrictions in the technology used. For netbooks with resolutions lower than 1024 x 768 pixels, and where the resource does not have the ability to scale, the content should be presented in a way that allows the user to scroll with the browser.

Java Runtime Environment

  • When you install the Java Runtime Environment (included in the Java Development Kit), the install format must be 'Windows offline installation, Multi-language'.

Required fonts

  • Some content requires Asian character sets. Please run the Font Analyser to determine if the correct fonts are installed on your machine.
